The Lord of the Seven Hills
Sri Venkateswara (Balaji, Srinivasa, Govinda) of Tirumala is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple atop the Tirumala Hills (Seshachalam range), 853 meters above sea level, receives over 50,000 devotees daily — making it the most visited religious site on earth.
The temple's annual revenue exceeds ₹3,000 crore ($360 million), and over 6 tons of gold are deposited as offerings annually. The Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) trust manages India's largest Hindu charitable institution.
The Sacred Legend
According to the Padma Purana and Venkatachala Mahatmyam, when Goddess Lakshmi left Vaikuntha in anger, Vishnu came to earth and settled on the Venkatadri hills. To marry Padmavathi (an incarnation of Lakshmi), he borrowed a vast sum from Kubera (the god of wealth). Lord Venkateswara is believed to still be repaying this cosmic debt — which is why devotees offer wealth (money, gold, hair) to help repay it. This loan will be repaid at the end of Kaliyuga.
The Mysterious Features
The idol of Venkateswara holds many mysteries:
- The idol is made of a single black granite stone (Shaligrama) and the exact material remains disputed
- Real hair grows from the back of the idol's head — kept well-groomed by priests
- Moisture forms on the left side of the idol's chest
- The backside of the idol feels hollow when tapped — as if the idol is empty inside
- The eyes of the idol are always partially closed — devotees believe that if fully opened, all creation would be consumed
Sacred Rituals
The temple operates around the clock with an elaborate schedule of pujas:
- Thiruvanandal — 2:30 AM (awakening the Lord)
- Viswarupam Darshan — the full form of the Lord revealed to devotees
- Thomala Seva — flower garland offering
- Asthanam — a daily court ceremony
- Ekanta Seva — final ritual before the Lord "rests"
Hair Offering (Tonsure)
One of the most striking practices at Tirupati — thousands of devotees (including many Bollywood and cricket stars) shave their heads as an offering of ego to the Lord. The collected hair is exported worldwide for wigs and adds significantly to temple revenues.
